CWS Window Installation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

CWS window installation in San Jose typically runs $85 – $140 per window for most retrofit work, and $180 – $320 when we’re replacing a full frame assembly that’s failed. If you’ve got a CWS window that’s binding, leaking, or simply impossible to open, we stock the common installation parts on our trucks and can usually get your window working the same week we see it.

Here’s how most San Jose homeowners find us: they’ve got a CWS window that worked fine for years, then one morning it doesn’t. Maybe the sash drags against the frame. Maybe water shows up on the sill after a February storm. Maybe the lock no longer catches. What they don’t know until we walk the job is whether they need a simple hardware swap, a balance replacement, or a full frame-and-flange redo. That’s exactly what this page covers.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS manufactures across three main product families: the 2000 Series (single-hung windows, the one we see most often in San Jose ranch homes built between 1995 and 2010), the 3000 Series (horizontal rollers and casements), and the 4000 Series (impact-rated, common in the hills and anywhere a homeowner got serious about sound and weather). The installation components we stock cover all three lines.

Identifying your model is straightforward, but there’s a wrinkle most owners miss: CWS puts the series sticker on the top edge of the sash, which you can only see when the window is open. Slide the sash up (or sideways) and look for a white label with a four-digit series code. If the label’s gone, measure the visible glass width. The 2000 Series runs 24 to 36 inches wide in standard increments. The 3000 and 4000 series go narrower, down to 18 inches, because they’re often used in pairs and corner assemblies. When we do a CWS window installation in San Jose, we verify the series against the original build date of the home by checking the glass etching code. That code, in the corner of the sealed unit, tells us the manufacture date, which tells us which hardware revision your window shipped with. CWS changed their balance shoe design company-wide in 2016, so a 2014 window and a 2019 window with the same series sticker will not take the same part. That’s the kind of checkable detail that saves you from buying a part that fits on paper and binds in the real world.

One more compatibility note: OEM CWS balances and shoes are worth the upcharge. We do install quality aftermarket equivalents, but CWS uses a ribbed vinyl shoe that seats deeper into the jamb track than generics. In San Jose’s dry-summer/wet-winter cycle, the OEM shoe holds tension longer because it engages more track surface. Aftermarket is fine for a temporary fix; OEM is the right answer if you plan to stay in the house.

Signs Your CWS Window Installation Is Failing

  • The window opens, then won’t stay up. A broken balance or a sagging spring means the sash weight isn’t being handled. What starts as an annoyance turns into a broken sash when it drops and cracks the corner joint.
  • You can see outdoor light through the closed sash. This is a seating problem: either the weatherstripping has compressed permanently or the sash has shifted in its track from a failed installation screw. Air follows light, and your cooling bill pays for it.
  • Condensation between the panes, not on them. The sealed unit has failed and the argon or krypton gas has leaked out. Interior fog you can wipe away is humidity; fog you can’t reach is a dead thermal unit.
  • The window opens two inches and then seizes. This is almost always a bent or dirty balance track, which happens when grit from a San Jose construction site or a dry summer’s dust works into the channel.
  • The lock lines up but won’t throw. Sash sag is the usual culprit. Warped frames and failed installation shims also do this, but a sagging sash is the first thing we check, because it’s the cheapest fix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Most CWS window installation work in San Jose falls into three bands. A hardware-only fix, like a balance, shoe, or lock replacement, runs $85 – $140 per window, including parts and labor. A sash replacement with new insulated glass runs $160 – $240 per window, depending on the size and whether we need to match Low-E glass (a thin coating that reflects heat back into the room in winter and out in summer). A full frame replacement runs $180 – $320 per opening, and that’s the only option when water has rotted the rough framing or the original installation was done wrong. You get a written line-item price before any work starts, so you’ll see the parts cost and the labor cost separated. If the work we do fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s in writing, and Owen Satterfield signs it himself.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely clean the tracks, replace a missing screw head cover, or note which windows are sticking before you call us. What you shouldn’t try on a CWS window is removing a sash to get at a balance. The tension in a CWS block-and-tackle balance, which is what their 2000 Series uses, is strong enough to take a finger off if the shoe slips while you’re working on it. Same goes for the coiled spring in a 3000 Series roller. A quick tip from the trade: if the window is still under a CWS warranty, call CWS first. We’re an independent service provider and proudly service CWS product, but we’re not affiliated with CWS. If CWS covers the part under their terms, use it. If they don’t, or if the window’s past warranty, that’s where we come in. Call us at (669) 333-7786 and describe what the window’s doing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a $110 fix or a replacment, and then we’ll come see it. Estimates are free.
